Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, Features Works by Warren Dennis
The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, will present the exhibit, Figures: Old and New, featuring works by Warren Dennis, from Aug. 5 - 26, 2005.
This exhibit features a wide range of both
Dennis' older and newer works and features people in various styles
and vocations. Visitors have a chance to view many never before
seen pieces of his collection, as well as many pieces which have
not been exhibited for several years.
Dennis, a native of Clarksdale, MS, who now resides in Boone,
NC, has been exhibiting his work since 1950. He received
his Bachelor's of Art Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi,
and his Master's of Fine Art Degree from the University of Mississippi
in Oxford. During his education, he studied with many artists,
such as, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Jack Tworkov, David Smith, and Reginald
Neal.
Throughout his artistic journey, Dennis has painted in many different styles, however, his favorite has been the portrayal of the human figure. He states, "Although I have painted mechanical cotton pickers, automobiles, landscapes and still lifes, my compelling interest throughout a long painting career has been in portraying the human figure in my own way. I have designed this exhibit to display the scope of that interest. All the paintings are of human beings: children and grandchildren, circus performers, butchers and musicians."
Dennis has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being featured as an "Expatriate Artist" in Art in Mississippi, 1720-1980, Heritage of Mississippi Series, Volume I, by Patti Carr Black. He is also the recipient of a purchase award for Summa Composite during a national juried art competition at Appalachian State University. His work has traveled the world, being featured in galleries and exhibits within North Carolina, New York City, Washington, Atlanta, Palm Beach, Bratislava, Slovakia, Tirana, Albania, Belfast, Portadown, Northern Ireland, Berlin, Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco.
Dennis' work is included in numerous permanent
collections including Appalachian State University, Bernhardt
Industries, Henredon Furniture Industries, Hickory Museum of Art,
Carlton Gallery, and the Allan Stone Gallery of New York.
In speaking on this upcoming exhibit, he states, "I welcome
this exhibition for the opportunity it affords the viewer - and
myself - to compare the old with the new in style, color, intensity,
subject matter, and effect."
