Works by Students of Metro School in Charlotte, NC, will be on Display for SouthEnd Gallery Crawl and at Charlotte Art League Gallery

Students of Metro School are creating over 700 square feet of outdoor art to adorn their new facility, being built adjacent to their current location on Second Street in uptown Charlotte, NC. Metro School serves approximately 200 students, ages 5 to 21, all of whom have significant developmental disabilities. These talented students are using their creative skills to design 8 inch square ceramic tiles, which reflect their vivid imaginations. Well over half of the tiles will be installed low to the ground, to be wheelchair accessible.

Metro School Art Instructors Lori Polite and Marie Davis, along with Charlotte Art League's Rose Hawley chose to begin with raw clay slabs to give Metro students more diversity, and a greater sense of accomplishment. "Our goal was to let each student go 'into' and come 'out of' each of their creations," says Rose Hawley. The finished tiles are filled with patterns, textures, and student favorites, like school busses, sea turtles, and french fries. Metro School Principal, Denise Comeaux said, "We are thrilled to see the students' creativity and self expression coming through in these unique tiles. They say a great deal about our students' ability levels and zest for life."

A portion of the tiles will be on display during Historic Southend's First Friday Gallery Crawl on Aug. 5, 2005, from 6-9pm. This exhibit is sponsored by, and will be located in the street in front of Black Sheep, 1519 Camden Road. Black Sheep is an independent store featuring the best in men and women's apparel, shoes, music, and skateboards.  The shop was established in 2003 to celebrate and promote unique art, music, creativity, and style.  Black Sheep is located at 1519 Camden Road in the Historic Southend neighborhood of Charlotte, NC.  For more information, visit their web site at (www.blacksheepNC.com).

If inclimate weather prevails, the exhibit will move indoors to Charlotte Art League, 1517 Camden Road. This exhibit will remain on display inside Charlotte Art League for the entire month of August.
