Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Timothy Coates
The Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Scenes from a year in India, featuring photography by Timothy Coates in the Saul Alexander Gallery through Aug. 2005.
Coates offers the following Artist Statement:
"My interest in India began because of the Portuguese presence
there. Therefore, many of the places where I lived and visited
were connected in one way or another with Indo-Portuguese history.
I lived in Goa for a year from 1990 to 1991 on a scholarship awarded
by the American Institute of Indian Studies. It was during that
period that these photographs were taken."
"When photographing sites such as these, I am drawn to historic
buildings or structures," adds Coates. I try to capture the
feel or mood of the place, but I am also tempted by contrasting
textures/surfaces and light playing on them. With the exception
of number 5, these are all still lifes. Having a human
element in some of these shots might have made them more interesting
for some people, but the reason why people are absent is that
I was attempting to capture a quiet moment in time. Living in
India, it is virtually impossible to not be surrounded by people
in most public places at all times. Bassein and Vijaynagar
are two notable exceptions."
"I hope that people who see this exhibit will be impressed
with the beauty of India, as well as aspects of its history, that
I am trying to show here."
