Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Photos from Craft Collection
The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, announces the new exhibition, Carolina in Focus: Photographs from the Craft Collection, opening Aug. 12, 2005, in the Charleston Renaissance Gallery. The exhibition features a selection of black and white photographs from Joy Craft's collection, an outstanding private collection dedicated to supporting art and artists of South Carolina. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 4, 2005.
Jack Leigh
The exhibition showcases an exquisite collection
of images representing urban and rural life in South Carolina. Featuring
thirty photographs, the exhibit is comprised of early twentieth-century
gelatin silver prints on paper and select contemporary images
that offer an investigation into South Carolina's past and features
such well-known photographers as Diane Arbus (American, 1923
1971), Walker Evans (American, 1903 1975), Lewis W. Hine
(American, 1874 1940) and Jack Leigh (American, 1949
2004).
During the 1930s and 1940s, many of the photographers featured
in the exhibit worked for the Works Progress Administration to
document life in the rural South. In addition to documentation,
many of the featured photographs are socially-conscience works
that were integral in affecting social and political change. The
photographs often share the dual purpose of conveying social commentary
while capturing nostalgic imagery of southern rural life.
A native of Belton, SC, Joy Craft's passion
for her home state inspired the development of her art collection. Though
a resident of Woodside, CA, since 1987, Craft's art collection
focuses on South Carolina images and artists.
Media support for this exhibit is provided by Deep magazine.
