SC Arts Commission in Columbia, SC, Awards $1.5 Million in Grants
The board of the South Carolina Arts Commission
in Columbia, SC, has approved over $1.5 million in grant awards
to support artists, arts organizations, arts activities and arts
education in the Palmetto State. The Board of Commissioners awarded
250 grants across the state in six grants categories:
Operating Support - 130 awards totaling $930,352. Operating Support
grants support arts organizations that provide ongoing arts experiences
and services to their communities. The grant provides consistent,
unrestricted support for basic operations. Applicants may apply
for support in 1-year or 3-year increments. Applications are reviewed
and scored by out-of-state panelists whose rankings are used to
determine award amounts.
Subgranting Awards - 14 awards totaling $90,456. Subgranting awards provide funds to local arts councils, which they distribute as quarterly grants to artists and organizations within their regions. The subgranting program is funded in part by the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.
Folklife and Traditional Arts Awards - 6 awards totaling $23,348. This program supports activities that promote the appreciation of South Carolina's many cultures through the presentation and documentation of traditional art forms, their practitioners, and the communities or cultures in which they are based.
Folklife and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship
Initiatives - 2 awards totaling $5,500. The Apprenticeship program
pairs master practitioners of traditional arts with apprentices
who are dedicated to carrying the traditional art form into the
next generation.
Arts in Education Awards - 95 awards totaling $429,716. Arts in
Education grants support comprehensive arts education programs
that will enhance student learning in schools across South Carolina.
Funds may be used at the school or district level to support artist
residencies, planning, program development and assessment.
Afterschool Arts Initiative Pilot Program - 3 awards totaling $30,000. The Afterschool Arts Initiative is a pilot program designed to increase access for South Carolina youth to high quality after school arts programs that promote social, intellectual, artistic and creative growth.
The total Arts Commission budget approved by
the Legislature for Fiscal Year 2005-2006, from state, federal,
and other sources, is $5,036,705, which includes $2,573,284 appropriated
for grants and pass-through
funds. The amount awarded in June is a part of that larger total
for grants, with the remainder reserved for awards through various
programs during the year. The Arts Commission was successful
in getting an increase in state appropriations for this year of
