August Issue 2005
Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Colleen Sterling
The work of Colleen Sterling opens at the Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, on Aug. 5. Titled, Interconnections, the exhibit runs through Aug. 31, 2005.
The interconnection of body and spirit - or
of the universe, in general - is a strong theme running through
Sterling's work. Using charcoal paste, Sterling makes a back panel
of artwork on canvas or board. She then 'draws' on acrylic
panels and mounts them on top of the black under drawings to create
a layering of imagery.
Sterling's themes are personal, spiritual and narrative. In several
of the works on exhibit, Sterling juxtaposes athletes over angels,
Greek spiritual models and other symbolic images to suggest the
potential for personal excellence.
In a work titled Delphinus, for example, Sterling laid
the constellation by that name over a female swimmer. The points
of the constellation are connected to form a dolphin, a creature
that is revered in mythology and was known to serve as a mystical
companion at sea.
In Connections, for example, Sterling painted an image
with Earth in the foreground covered by a spiral cloud, and the
universe beyond Earth, on a 66" x 72" canvas. She then
made eight images that represent everyday life - such as eating
a bowl of porridge or drinking a cup of coffee - on plexiglas
and mounted them around the earth, visually presenting the concept
that all things are connected. She repeats the spiral image of
universality in each of the smaller vignettes that represent daily
life.
An artist of national and international renown, Sterling is one
of 18 artists selected from a field of 25,000 applicants to create
site-specific artwork for Hartsfield International Airport in
Atlanta, GA. Her work titled, Flight of the Spirit,
was installed in 1999 and continues to hang in that airport.
Sterling's work is in the permanent collection of the Hunter Museum
in Chattanooga, TN, and in numerous corporate and private collections
in the United States, France and Germany. She studied at Mundelein
College (Loyola University) and the Museum School of the Art Institute
in Chicago, and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.
A resident of the Blue Ridge Mountain community of Blairsville,
GA, Sterling is the sister of Hendersonville resident and actor
Kevin McKee.
