Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Offers Mixed Media Sculpture Show and Works by Joel Wilkinson
Summer is the season for sculpture at the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, with the contemporary arts institution presenting a major exhibit, Space, Surface, Shadow: Interpretations by Twelve Sculptors. There is also a new exhibit of landscape paintings by Joel Wilkinson of Greenville, SC, entitled, Altered States. Both shows will continue through Sept. 3, 2005.
A primary objective of the sculpture exhibit
is to demonstrate the variety and depth of three-dimensional artists
living and working in western North Carolina and the upstate of
South Carolina. The artists are Bill Brown, (Linville, NC),
Richard Conn, (Landrum, SC), Philip Dusenbury and Dale Weiler,
(Tryon, NC), Karen Ives and Robert Winkler, (Asheville, NC), Doug
McAbee, (Spartanburg, SC), Dale McEntire, (Saluda, NC), Dan Millspaugh,
(Fairview, NC), Ila R. Seltzer and Martin Webster, (Burnsville, NC),
and Julia Stout, (Black Mountain, NC).
Many of the artists participated in the memorable 2004 juried
show at the North Carolina Arboretum, Cultivating A Living
Treasure. Quite a few are involved with Mountain Sculptors
and Tri-State Sculptors.
Space, Surface, Shadow is characterized by its eclecticism. The various mediums include the traditional steel, stone and bronze along with less conventional materials such as fabric, paint, paper and masonite. There is large and small work, hanging work, figurative and abstract forms, conceptual pieces and some work installed outdoors in downtown Tryon. The outdoor sculpture is by Conn, Millspaugh and Winkler and will remain in place for a year.
"This show is proof of how diverse
the art of sculpture is becoming," says McEntire, who organized
the exhibit with Weiler. "It's an opportunity to see how
many artists in our region are creating exciting work."
