Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Robert Spires
Delicate, intricate and exacting are terms many use to describe the work of local naturalist artist Robert Spires. The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Robert Spires: Forms of Nature, on view through Oct. 22, 2006, in the Museum's Gifford Gallery.
Hickory resident, Spires has always been known to many to be passionate about nature and his art; gifts nurtured by his mother and god parents. Few people, however, know that he collects and preserves natural specimens, often scanning the environment for new finds to use as subject matter in his paintings. As he laughingly says, "I have frozen critters in my freezer. If you are working from a real butterfly, flower or plant as opposed to a photograph, you can capture the essence of its delicacy with remarkable detail that too often may be completely overlooked."
