Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC, Offers Annual Benefit Auction on Aug. 11 & 12, 2006
The 21st annual Penland School of Crafts Benefit Auction will take place on Aug. 11 and 12, 2006, at the Penland campus in western North Carolina. The focus of the weekend is the auction of more than 150 pieces of work in ceramics, glass, metals, jewelry, textiles, wood, handmade books, photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. The work has been donated by current and former Penland instructors and resident artists, including some of the country's most prominent craft artists. The event includes a lecture, a gallery-style exhibition of the work, cocktails, music, dinner, and luncheon, all set against the spectacular backdrop of the Blue Ridge mountains. Proceeds benefit the programs and studios of Penland School of Crafts.
A special feature of the 2006 auction is a collector's lecture by Bebe Johnson. Johnson is an authority on contemporary studio furniture and co-proprietor of the Pritam & Eames Gallery in East Hampton, NY. Her lecture will be followed by a special auction of wood furniture and sculpture to benefit Penland's new wood studio.
The table centerpieces, which will be for sale at the end of the auction, have been specially made by glass artist James Vella of New Orleans. Vella's studio was damaged by hurricane Katrina, but he was able to spend several weeks this spring creating the centerpieces in one of Penland's glass studios.
Admission for the auction is $50 for the Friday afternoon lecture and wood auction; $100 for the Friday evening reception, dinner, live and silent auctions; and $200 for the Saturday events, including coffee at the Penland gallery. Absentee bidding is available for a $25 fee. Seating is limited; to request an invitation or to make a reservation, call 828/765-2359, ext. 45 or send e-mail to (auction@penland.org).
More details about
the auction and an example of James Vella's centerpieces are available
at (www.penland.org). A complete catalog of auction work will
be available by mail and online in mid-July. Penland School of
Crafts is located 52 miles north of Asheville, NC.
