Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Jackie Humes
The Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present the exhibit, Carolina Memoirs, featuring works by Jackie Humes, on view at Art League Gallery from Aug. 14 through Sept. 8, 2007.
Humes has been in love with the Lowcountry since 1991 when she returned to the United States. Following the death of her husband in 1999, she moved to Hilton Head. She's recorded her Lowcountry memoirs in pastels for this exhibit.
Says Humes, "I love the ever-changing colors of our marsh, our live oaks with their Spanish moss, the ocean and the beach. No matter how many times I draw the same scene, each time is like the first, because it is never the same. It is an ongoing challenge to translate what I perceive in my own mind, to commit my vision to paper, and finally to communicate to the viewer."
Humes comes from a family of artists. Two of her father's sisters were artists. She attributes her interest in art to her aunt who was a fine artist and a teacher at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. Humes graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in journalism. This was followed by a degree in psychology from Queensland University in Brisbane, Australia where she lived for 15 years and worked as a Welfare Officer in a men's medium security prison. She left Australia in 1990.
On Hilton Head, Humes devoted her energies to her art, taking workshops with Joyce and Don Nagel. She won the Best of Show award in the 2005 Hilton Head Plantation Artist's Juried Show and received an honorable mention for her entry in 2004.
Humes is a member of the Southeastern Pastel Society, the Art League of Hilton Head, Hilton Head Plantation Artists, Society of Bluffton Artists and the Beaufort Artists' Association.
Humes now resides in Fernandina Beach, FL.
