Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Alison McCauley
Alison McCauley's new Peru inspired work in clay will be featured at Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC. The exhibit entitled, Peruvian Impressions, will be on view through Aug. 31, 2007.
McCauley, a well-known potter from Summerville,
SC, working since the mid seventies has developed a distinctive
and diverse body of work in clay. Her graceful and functional
vessels are sometimes decorated with horses or fish. And the popular
face pieces range from masks to jugs and mugs to pure sculpture,
often with a hint of humor. Recently back from Peru, she has
been inspired to produce a whole new series based on images seen
there.
McCauley says, "This selection of work is a departure from
my usual work in stoneware. It is mostly unglazed and smoke fired,
reminiscent of the vast desert and rocky terrain seen along the
coast from Lima to Nasca. It includes a series of wall tiles,
some of which depict images from the famous Nasca Lines and others
the animals that were common sights along the way."
Born in Jacksonville, FL, McCauley has lived in Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, and now in Summerville. She has pursued her interest in clay since her BA in Art in l975. She taught at her studio for many years. McCauley's influence as a teacher will be seen for many years to come in the work of up and coming potters.
McCauley, and her husband of thirty-five years, Mike, enjoy living in the beautiful Summerville area. They have three children and two grandchildren.
McCauley is currently working in clay and painting in oil on canvas. Her work is available at Charleston Crafts, The South Carolina Artisans Center, and the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery.
Charleston Crafts is a co-op gallery exhibiting the works of thirty members in clay, wood, fiber, jewelry, paper, glass, baskets, photography, metal, and polymer clay. Nestled in downtown Charleston between King and Meeting on Hasell St., it is an inspiring gallery to visit.
