Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, Offers Voorhees Family Exhibition
The Voorhees Family: An Art Legacy, is on view at Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, through Aug. 26, 2007.
Come view works by members of this extraordinary family of artists known throughout North Carolina and the southeast. Their collection of paintings, pottery, photography, furniture and jewelry will be featured in Hand in Hand Gallery's new exhibition space and will tell the story of this artistically gifted family.
The art legacy began with Edwin Voorhees, known for his watercolor seascapes, and is continuing through his wife, Mildred, their children and grandchildren. A selection of Edwin's original works from the family collection will be exhibited for the first time since his death in 1999. Mildred, now the matriarch of the family and living in Asheville, NC, paints with oils and colorfully patterned watercolors. She has gained recognition via numerous awards and publications.
Daughter, Susan, an occupational therapist living in Asheville, works in oils and pastels. Daughter, Jane, also from Asheville, is a member of The North Carolina Watercolor Society, works in watercolors and will also show her line of cards. Son, David, a professional potter since 1974, makes hand painted porcelain, wood fired and raku fired pottery. David's wife, Molly, fabricates contemporary jewelry using sterling silver, gold and natural found pebbles. David and Molly own Hand in Hand Gallery and are both members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in Asheville. Son, Chad, from Morehead City, NC, know nationally for his furniture will have a few examples displayed. Chad's wife, Amy, paints richly colored oils.
Granddaughter Elizabeth, from Asheville will be showing her photography and painting. Granddaughter Catherine who lives in Chapel Hill, NC, will be showing her paintings. Grandaughter Susie, a student at Cooper Union in New York City will be showing her fabricated silver jewelry and great granddaughter, Andie Lieberman, from St. Augustine, FL, will display her pearl and crystal earrings.
