Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia,
SC, Offers Views from Museum's Collection
The exhibition, Southern Traditions,
on view at the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, features
highlights of Southern decorative and fine art from the Museum's
collection. This installation, which will remain on long-term
view in the BB&T Focus Gallery, will showcase the richness
and diversity of the Museum's collection of furniture, ceramics,
silver, basketry, sculpture and paintings by artists native to,
or active in, South Carolina and its surrounding states.
"By consolidating these works into one gallery, visitors
can easily explore the centuries-long artistic traditions of South
Carolina and the Southeast region," associate curator of
decorative arts, Brian Lang said.
Among the works on view will be fine silver made by Charleston and Columbia silversmiths; a sweet grass basket by Mary Jackson (South Carolina, born 1945); wood carvings by Edgar Alexander McKillop (North Carolina, 1879-1950); and paintings by Charles Fraser (South Carolina, 1782-1860), Xanthus Russell Smith (South Carolina, 1839-1929), William Harrison Scarborough (South Carolina, 1812-1871), William Aiken Walker (South Carolina, 1838-1921), among others.
