Tryon Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, Features Works by Eldred Hudson

Tryon Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, is presenting an exhibit of works by Eldred Hudson, on view through Aug. 9, 2008, in Gallery One at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.

Hudson's collage works stems form his fascination with "giving new life to images from other contexts."  As a child, he began collecting hundreds of images from vintage print advertising in the fifties and sixties. Subsequently, he would later manipulate these images, applying them in his art to redefine their original subjects.

When Hudson began teaching after leaving a ten-year career in commercial design, he found that "most of visual thinking remained heavily influenced by print material and the images of western mass culture."  With his new artistic direction, he experienced a new freedom with his work. Hudson is currently Associate Professor of Photography at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.

"Collage by definition is an improvisational medium in that it allows the artist to combine found objects from our everyday world and literally play with them until they for a coherent composition," says Hudson.

By combining original photographs, drawing, painting, and printmaking techniques, Hudson intends to "engage in a dialog" with his audience and to "invite restructuring thoughts about a number of social issues and life experiences."
