The Gallery at Carillon in Charlotte, NC, Features Exhibit by Studio XI
Currently on view at the Gallery at Carillon in Charlotte, NC, through Sept. 8 is the exhibition, Second Nature: Works from Studio XI, featuring the work of six gifted artists challenged by developmental disabilities: Sarah Britt, Harold Crowell, Thomas McCrary, Laura McNellis, Ricky Needham and Brooks Yeomans. All artists are residents of Signature, the country's only home for artistically gifted and developmentally challenged adults which opened in 1993 by Western Carolina Center Foundation in Morganton, NC.
To complement the home, the Foundations developed Studio XI, a studio co-operative and gallery in 1994 and serves as a unique alternative to the traditional day placement options for the talented artists living at Signature. The only similar studio/gallery in this country focusing on arts and disabilities is Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California. Western Carolina Center Foundation is a public nonprofit organization created in 1981 to meet the critical needs of persons with disabilities living in western North Carolina.
On Friday, September 8, the Gallery at Carillon will host a reception, performance and informal gallery talk from 5:30-8pm. All participating artists will be present. Performances by Studio XI artists, Thomas McCrary and Charlene Sawyer are scheduled to begin at 6pm with the gallery talk beginning at 7:15pm. Participants in the gallery talk are Dr. Iverson Riddle and Marsha Riddle with the Western Carolina Center; Laurie Corral, Director, Studio XI, Lynn Strange, sister of Laura McNellis, Barry Huffman, collector and Tom Stanley, Director of Winthrop University Galleries as Moderator.
