Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05
erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.
Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".
Renowned Oil Painter, Potter to Exhibit in Main Gallery; e.r.1's new Gallery G to Showcase Noted N.C. Artist
Bright, colorful paintings by Jim Chapman, a nationally known oil painter, and pottery by Patrick Dougherty, a NC potter, will be on exhibit in the main gallery at e.r.l. originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Sept.8 - Oct. 18. At the same time, watercolors by award-winning NC artist Elizabeth Reeves Lyon will be on exhibit in e.r.l's new Gallery G.
Jim Chapman
Chapman's art has a highly personal, even unique style that addresses the traditional subject matter of still life and landscape. His richly textured paintings are an inspired variation on Post-Impressionism color theory combined with a keen observation of the natural world.
A one-time art student at Appalachian State University, Chapman studied under master mentor John Groth, with the Art Students League in New York City. He has traveled widely in the United States, Europe and Asia, working with painting and photography on commercial projects for Crown Publishing and the North Carolina Department of Tourism, as well as private commissions. Chapman's paintings, which he has exhibited since 1986, can be seen in corporate collections throughout NC, including Wachovia Bank, Raycom, Bank of America, and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Patrick L. Dougherty
Patrick L. Dougherty is a frequent instructor at Penland School of Arts in Penland, N.C. He has exhibited at numerous shows and galleries, among them a solo exhibit at the Carnegie Arts Center in Covington, KY: Tabletops exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; with Penland Area Potters at Lill Street Gallery in Chicago; Dia De Los Muertos (Invitational) at the Zebulon Gallery in Burnsville, NC; and Celebration of the Arts in Spruce Pine, NC. In addition to Penland School, Dougherty, who holds a masters of fine arts from Clemson University, has taught ceramics and design at Northern Kentucky University and Xavier University.
Elizabeth Reeves Lyon - for whom e.r.l. is named - will be the first artist to exhibit in the new Gallery G. Linda Lyon Turner, who founded e.r.l originals in 1978, used her mother's initials for the company's name. In 1996, Peter and Lee Swenson purchased the business.
Lyon, who has exhibited in more than 67 one-person shows as well as in many national and regional displays, works with many mediums, from mixed media to watercolors, pen and ink drawings to pastels. In 1993, she received a Distinguished Alumni Award from UNC-G, and the Durham Art Guild has recognized her for her support and service of visual arts in the Triangle. Her works are part of many public collections, among them Duke University Medical Center, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Glaxo, Sara Lee, Bank of America, and Wachovia.
