Malaprop's in Asheville, NC, Features Exhibit by Carol Baker
Asheville artist Carol Baker will be exhibiting double exposure black and white photographs on the art wall at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café in Asheville, NC, through Oct. 3. Created "in the camera", the series called Abiding Presence places the Thomas Wolfe angel which resides in the Oakdale Cemetery, in Hendersonville, NC, into familiar scenes around Asheville.
A native of Blacksburg, VA, Baker relocated to Asheville in 1990. During 1993-1996, she lived two blocks from the Thomas Wolfe House in a downtown loft space when Asheville was becoming known as a spiritual center.
"It was there that I first read Look Homeward Angel. The city took on a different meaning, looking through Wolfe's eyes. The more I walked the streets of downtown, I felt inspired to explore the idea that the angel's presence is still here after all these years."
Following her intuition, Baker was able to pursue the idea while taking photography courses at McDowell Tech Community College in Marion, NC. Originally a set of small prints in a handmade album, Baker completed the project in the spring of 1998. Ironically, the Thomas Wolfe House was burned by arson two months later.
"Since the Thomas Wolfe Center is celebrating Thomas Wolfe's 100th birthday this year, I felt it was fitting that I show the series."
Baker has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond and a MS in textile design from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Since 1968, she has used photography as one of her media of expression. Baker has exhibited her work in 23 states including The Virginia Museum, Richmond, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, The American Institute of Architects, Washington, DC., and Fiberworks, Berkeley, California.
