Works Of Richard Jesse Watson at Montreat College in Montreat, NC

An exhibit of the paintings of Richard Jesse Watson is on display in Montreat College's Hamilton Gallery. The exhibit will be on view through Sept. 3.

An award winning and highly acclaimed artist, Watson illustrated Ruth Bell Graham's "One Wintry Night" which won the 1995 C.S. Lewis Gold Medal for Children's Picture Books and has been published in twenty foreign languages. His recreation of the Old English tale TomThumb won the Golden Kite Award for Illustration and was a Booklist Editor's Choice. His illustrations for James Dickey's Bronwen, the Traw and the Shapeshifter won the Parent Choice Award for Illustrations. He illustrated The High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake, written by Nancy Willard, which was chosen the Best Picture Book of the Year by People Magazine in 1990 and was an IRA-CBC Children's Choice. Watson was named an Ezra Jack Keats Fellow by the Kerlan Collection of the University of Minnesota.

The summer show in the Hamilton Gallery on the mezzanine of the L. Nelson Bell Library will feature original art from Waterfall's Gift Book and The Legend of St. Christopher, both are soon to be published works.

Watson's paintings have been viewed in galleries across the country As a guest speaker, he has passed on his love for art and literature in elementary schools, high schools, universities, as well as to prisoners, through Arts-In-Corrections Program.

As a child Watson says he dreamed of "climbing into pictures." In fact he says "I still climb into my pictures when illustrating a book. This portmanteau world of children's literature is the jolliest combination of the written word and the painted picture - the perfect traveling bag for exploring the universe"
