Works by Siblings Featured at Tryon Fine Arts Center Exhibit in Tryon, NC
Tryon Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, will host the exhibit A Family Affair, featuring the works of sister and brother Sarah Myhre Gartner and Matthew Myhre through Sept. 12.
Sarah Myhre Gartner started "sewing" at the age of 4, when to keep her occupied while sewing her mother would set Gartner down at her feet with needle, thread, buttons rickrack and snippets of fabric to play with. Ever since then, she has loved collecting fabrics, buttons and beads to use in creating clothing, quilts, and fabric collages. Her delicate beading and quilting designs are richly colored and intricut. Her sense of color and design give a jewel-like quality to her needle work. Her drawings exhibit a bolder technique. According to Gartner, "There are never enough hours in the day, never enough fabric, never enough beads to suit me!"
A graduate of Hope College with a Bachelor's Degree in art and an emphasis on drawing and printmaking Gartner is now Special Events Coordinator for the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Matthew Myhre has been creating art from bits and pieces of found objects from childhood. Between the fabric found in his mother's sewing room and the items found in his father's basement workshop, he had a great assortment to choose from. And because his father was a visual designer he had access to a studio environment for his experimentation.
At one point in his life he was a trash collector and found homes for many discarded items. He would carry tools so he could dissect the parts he wanted, leaving the rest.
Myhre's current work focuses on semi-functional furniture pieces. His "recycle" concept is evident in his cabinets and mirror frames. The cabinet pieces have a totemic feel commanding a strong visual presence. When asked where he gets his inspiration, he said "I believe that a functional piece should have rich aesthetic properties, making it visually fun. My work begins with Shaker styles lines and ends up somewhere between the Flintstones and the Jetsons. It makes me want to smile..."
