September Issue 2001
Charleston, SC's, City Gallery Presents Several Exhibitions During September
The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, is featuring an exhibit of oil on paper works by local artist Geoffrey Cormier entitled, Simple Entertainment (paintings and shadow puppets by Geoffrey), which will be on view through Sept. 23, 2001.
Cormier was born in North Andover, MA, in 1969.
At the age of 3 his family moved to James Island, SC, where he
went to school and developed an interest in drawing and playing
the drums. Cormier started painting in high school after his parents
bought him a small oil paint set for Christmas.
Cormier has attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and
the College of Charleston. At some point he was offered a job
on a movie set. He continued designing and building sets for television
and film for six years.
Cormier then moved back to Charleston where he wrote two books
on folk artists and continued painting and playing music. After
realizing he was seeing puppets in his head as he played music,
Cormier started building puppets and produced the Wayang Cardboard-Improvisational
Shadow Puppet theater. He now paints in his garage after making
too big of a mess everywhere else.
Starting on Sept. 27, the City Gallery will present the 2001 MOJA Arts Festival Invitational Exhibition, featuring works by MOJA poster artist for 2001, Paul Goodnight.
During this same time period another MOJA Invitational
Exhibition will be held in the Drawing Room at the Dock Street
Theatre. This exhibition will feature works by Ben Kelly. Both
exhibitions will be on view through Oct. 30, 2001.
