Halsey Gallery Hosts Exhibition of Works by Michael Tyzack in Charleston, SC

The William Halsey Gallery at the College of Charleston's School of the Arts in Charleston, SC, is hosting an exhibition entitled, Appropriate to the Moment Works by Michael Tyzack, 1989 - 2001, which continues through Sept 29, 2001.

Appropriate to the Moment Works by Michael Tyzack. 1989 - 2001 highlights the work of Michael Tyzack, Professor of Fine Arts and Chair of Studio Art at the College. Tyzack has spent the last twelve years creating this body of work, which investigates hard-edged abstraction within self-imposed limitations of size, orientation and palette. These elegant, minimal works feature both subtle variations in color and sharp juxtapositions of lights and darks, and reveal themselves fully only through close observation.

Tyzack was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and studied at the Sheffield College of Art and Crafts, the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London, and at the University of London. He has exhibited internationally at the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris, France; at Documents 4 in Kassell, West Germany; the Angela Flowers Gallery in London, England; nationally at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City; and the Institute of Contemporary Art in New Orleans, LA. In SC, Tyzack has exhibited at the SC State Museum in Columbia and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston. Additionally, his works are held in the public collections of the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Kunstmuseum in Bern, Switzerland, and the SC Arts Commission State Art Collection in Columbia, SC.

The Halsey Gallery is especially pleased to host this exhibition that will honor the innumerable contributions Tyzack has made to the College, the greater Charleston community, and the State of SC since his arrival in 1976. It represents a culminating event in the artist's exceptional career as an artist and educator. This exhibition also serves as the College's contribution to Views from the Edge of the Century, a statewide celebration of the visual arts in SC, sponsored by the SC Arts Commission and Bank of America. A full-color catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
