Part II of Ansel Adams Salute on View at Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC

In Charlotte, NC, Part II of the Mint Museum of Art's 100th anniversary salute to Ansel Adams opens with 13 additional photographs on display in the Crist Gallery through April 14, 2002.

Adams' landscape photography is a staple of American photographic art. The popularity of his work, ironically, altered some of the very landscapes depicted, as motels, restaurants and power lines sprang up to accommodate large numbers of visitors wanting to experience in person his wilderness vistas. Fortunately, the national park system and the physical isolation of other locales have preserved many in their natural state.

The thirteen photographs on display range from his earlier work, such as Frozen Lake and Cliffs, Sierra Nevada, CA, c. 1932, to later works such as Eagle Peak and Middle Brother, Winter, Yosemite National Park, CA, c. 1968. The work of Ansel Adams serves as a bridge between two traditions. He was among the last of the romantic artists who view the wilderness as a metaphor for freedom and heroic aspirations.
