Sumter, SC, Offers 3rd Annual Fall Art Event & Exhibition
Accessibility is an exhibition of varied and alternative forms of high quality artwork, events and discussions, presented in nontraditional and high-traffic public areas in downtown Sumter, SC, from Sept. 28 through Oct. 27, 2001. Participating artists are from across SC, GA and TN.
Following two successful years of Installations on Main, Accessibility seeks to expand the format and raise the quality of the artwork. It will be a four week long exhibition designed to provide insight to alternative forms of contemporary art, public exposure through nontraditional venues, and focus attention on the downtown areas of Sumter. The exhibition will combine a focus on site sensitive artworks with multiple points of local interest, establish interaction between artists and the local community, involve a broader range of viewers, and provide a scavenger-hunt atmosphere that brings with it insight to the arts and renewed attention to the downtown. The exhibition will also include onetime, short-term art and educational events that don't lend themselves to the longer exhibition duration.
The types of artwork are atypical in form and/or format and site related. They include installations, environmental art, public art, performance art, artist's books/publications and traditional artworks in site-sensitive locations. Map/catalog site guides are available at the opening event, Sept., 28 from 6-9pm, and individual sites.
Participating artists are Beau Bennoit, Thomas Budden, Barry Jones, Laura Kissel, Jennifer Laffoon, Deanna Lemon, Robert Lyon, Mark McLeod, Linda McCune, Marcelo Novo, Janet Orselli, Scotty Peek, Leslie Rech, Billy Renkl, Chris Robinson, Virginia Scotchie, Loren Schwerd, Tom Stanley, Bernadette Vielbig and Jennifer Wallace. The discussion facilitators are Cynthia Colbert, Brad Collins, Jeffrey Day, Harriett Green, Dan Streible and Robin Waites.
