Transylvania Co. Arts Council in Brevard, NC, Features Works of SC Artists
The Transylvania County Arts Council in Brevard,
NC, is presenting an Invitational Show of work of three South
Carolina artists, including works by Judy Blanchard, Lena Massara,
and Barbara St. Denis. The exhibition will be on view through
Oct. 2, 2001.
Judy Blanchard of Salem, SC, concentrates now on clay sculptures,
the medium that first attracted her in junior high school when
she won a scholarship to the prestigious Cleveland Institute of
Art. She might do a little painting or drawing as a break from
"the intensity of feeling the clay."
Blanchard makes pieces as large as her kiln can hold. Some are for floor or wall spaces while others can stand by themselves.
Lena Massara, also of Salem, calls herself
an experimental mixedmedia painter. Among her 20 pieces in the
show she will display some pastels as well as metals made of copper
or brass meshing, aluminum flashing and gold leafing. She uses
acrylics, car enamel or metal paints on those surfaces. "My
creative desire is to experiment with different media on different
surfaces to create a visual stimulation, the unexpected,"
says Massara.
Barbara St. Denis of Easley, SC, is a painter and business owner.
The Art Emporium is her retail art store, custom frame shop and
art gallery.
St. Denis works in watermedia which includes water colors, acrylics
and combinations. She began painting 26 years ago in New York,
first taking lessons and later teaching there and afterwards in
Easley.
"I like to do figures, but not as realistic portraits, more as a design element. My daughter Jacquie is usually my model but each painting of her is completely different. I like to experiment with color placement for drama and excitement."
