September Issue 2001
The Student Center at UNC-Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, Presents an Exhibition on African Culture
The exhibition, The Gnawa: African Trance Culture In Morocco, will take place from Sept. 29 through Oct. 14, at the Student Center Gallery, at UNC Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, NC.
Who are the Gnawa? The Gnawa are descendants of sub-Saharan Black slaves living in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. They are healers. They are musicians. They are instrument makers. They are of Islam and they are of Black Africa. They celebrate the past and live the present, in beauty and in struggle. The events comprised in The Gnawa: African Trance Culture in Morocco were organized to offer some historical and present-day perspectives on a culture virtually unknown in this country, and to offer an opportunity to experience some of their traditions firsthand. If you would like to find out more, please come see and hear for yourself! Many of these events are completely free of charge.
