The Arts Center in Brevard, NC, Features Photography Exhibit and Historical Photographs from the 1850s to 1954
The Transylvania County Arts Council and the Brevard Camera Club are displaying an exhibit of photography at the Community Arts Center in Brevard, NC, through Sept. 17, 2002. The exhibit entitled In Focus, features work by regional photographers. Also on view will be a collection of photographs that track the history of Brevard through landscapes and architectural images of downtown and the farmlands of the surrounding county.
Professional photographer William C. Austin took the majority of the photographs in the collection from 1925 through 1954. Upon his death, his daughters Pat and Jeanette Austin acquired the rare images. The sisters went on to supplement the collection with photographs from the 1850s and their own photographs of Brevard that they began taking from 1954. Recently, Pat turned the collection over to the Transylvania County Historical Society for safekeeping and the Society in turn has temporarily loaned them to the Arts Council for this special exhibition opportunity. The photographs are mounted in albums that visitors can peruse at their leisure.
