September Issue 2002
Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features Works by Joseph Cave
The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island
South Carolina will present an exhibition entitled Recent Painting
by Joseph Cave. The exhibition will open on Sept. 1, during
a gallery crawl from 5-9pm in conjunction with The Minton Festival
of Music & Art in Pawleys Island. It continues through Sept.
29, 2002.
Trained as an abstract expressionist, but also inspired by early
landscape artists, both American and French, Cave's works are
distinguished by his use of vivid color, lines, and shadows. His
marine landscapes are remarkable for his distinct approach to
depicting reflections, and his floral still-life paintings radiate
emotion through bold use of color.
A native of Columbia, SC, Cave attended the University of Georgia
(Athens), and went on to study at the San Francisco Art Institute
where he received a BFA in Painting in 1962. He received a Master
of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking in 1964 from San Francisco
State University. He has held several teaching positions at institutions
including The Memphis Academy of Art, San Francisco Art Institute,
and San Francisco State University. Cave lived and painted in
Portugal from 1984 until 1989 when he returned to the Carolinas.
His paintings have been featured in numerous one-man shows throughout
the United States and abroad. He now resides in historic Georgetown,
SC, where he maintains a studio.
