Hamlet Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Mark Stuart Woodward & Kellie Jacobs
Hamlet Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, will be presenting an exhibit of whimsical sculptures by Mark Stuart Woodward and pastel paintings by Kellie Jacobs from Sept. 5 - 30, 2002.
Kellie Jacobs
Kellie Jacobs is a contemporary emerging artist who paints with a palette based on mood and emotions that are intuitive to her psychological training. "First Impressions is a collection of landscapes providing an intrinsic understanding of the Lowcountry. Having lived along the Santee River and being a part of a family deeply entwined in the local artistic scene, she draws on her unique experience to create her moody and softly textured pastel paintings. It is her reaction to these experiences that serve as her inspiration. Jacobs visually describes the scene, but allows the viewer to complete the landscape by adding his or her own personal experiences or memories. She says, "It is important to me as an artist to convey an emotional response to my observations of nature."
Mark Woodward
A long, long, long time ago, sometime after the beginning of time, these eerie but whimsical creatures crawled out from the slimy ooze. Evolution gone awry, these amphibioids became the ancestors of us all. These creations are the work of Mark Stuart Woodward who lets his lighter side show in his latest show, Primordial Soup. Woodward hand-builds his buddies from mud (clay) using the coiled-pot method first discovered by ancient peoples. The pieces are then fired, glazed and then refired to give them their colorful and glossy finish. The eyes are made of dichroic glass that he cuts and melts in his studio. Woodward invites you to "waller" with his creations in the Primordial Soup they call home, the Hamlet Gallery.
