McColl Center in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Leslie Bivens
McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, is proud to announce a one person show entitled, carapace, for Charlotte artist Leslie Bivens. According to the artist, carapace /kar-e-pas/: a protective, decorative, or disguising shell will, "...explore the societal masks that women wear as well as their liberation from these masks." The exhibition will be on view in the Center's Dickson Gallery through Sept. 19, 2002.
The six female torsos in carapace are a representation of the objectified, idealized woman created by society and depict the objectified woman breaking free of her shell or mask to reveal what belongs to herself.
Bivens was a featured artist in the McColl Center for Visual Art Chairs on Parade exhibition and has exhibited at the Urthona Gallery From the Gut Art Show in Asheville in 2000 and The Light Factory Member's Show from 1993-2001.
