Roanoke Island Festival Park Art Gallery in Manteo, NC, Features Works by James Smythe
Enjoy more than 40 paintings representing North Carolina landscapes from the mountains to the coast by artist James Smythe at the Roanoke Island Festival Park Art Gallery, located in Manteo, NC. The exhibition entitled, From Manteo to Murphy: Oil and Pastel Paintings, will be on view from Sept. 2 - 26, 2002.
Smythe looks for something dynamic in the landscape for inspiration when choosing a subject. From Manteo to Murphy: Oil and Pastel Paintings features paintings chosen by Smythe because of the feeling of North Carolina pride they evoke. "I want people to have an emotional reaction to the paintings," said Smythe. Before beginning a work, Smythe heads to a location to study its design, sketch it and photograph it. If his criteria are met, he begins work. "When the elements of art become as important as the subject in the painting I am creating, I am heading in the right direction," said Smythe. He considers the painting a success when the medium overtakes the subject.
Smythe has been a practicing artist for more than 30 years. He graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in art, and later received a Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has taught art for many years at Western Carolina University. He currently teaches foundation courses and art appreciation. He is a painter with an extensive exhibition record. Works of art in this exhibit are for sale.
