Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Offers Works by Seagrove Potters
It's been going on in the Seagrove area of NC for more than nine generations: traditional and functional pottery, made from the land. With more than a hundred potteries in the area, Seagrove is known nationwide as the "Pottery capital" of NC. There are so many potters in this area that you can find almost every color, every technique, every glaze, every medium you might be looking for, which is why so many people travel there each year. During the month of Sept., you only have to travel to Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, to see this variety for yourself. Wilkes Art Gallery's Seagrove Pottery Showcase will be on exhibit Sept. 6 -28, 2002.
Having a group show will allow the Gallery to properly display the diversity of Seagrove. The exhibit will include works by over 20 potters, who will have 5 to 10 pieces each on display. Each potter works in a distinctive and personalized style making it possible for everyone to find a favorite. Last year's Seagrove show was a huge success, and several of the participants will be returning this year like Charles and Penny of Fat Beagle Pottery. Fat Beagle specializes in an assortment of functional stoneware, high fired to 2400 degrees for durability and luster. Also featured is beautiful specialty-called "Stoneku" stoneware.
Another favorite, Phil Morgan, will return as well this year. Morgan's shapes and forms bring forward an ancient porcelain-glazing technique from the Chung Dynasty. Also participating in the exhibit are: Jugtown Pottery, Lantern Hill, Living Waters, The Potter's Cooperative, Ben Owen, Humble Mill, Fork Creek Mill, Magnolia Place, Dirt Works, Great White Oaks, Blue Moon, Dixieland, The Pottery Shoppe, and several others.
