Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Ce Scott

Skin by Charlotte, NC-based artist Ce Scott will open in Artspace's Gallery 1 on Sept. 27 and will continue through Nov. 15, 2003, in the Raleigh, NC, facility.

For more than fifteen years, Scott has created artwork focused on personal, cultural, and social themes, including misconceptions about beauty regarding African American women, sexism as it is related to language and the media, and the Santeria religion. Previously working in mixed media assemblage boxes, Scott has moved toward creating full room installations. Known for unexpected juxtapositions or manipulations of everyday objects, Scott creates provocative installations laden with deep meaning. Skin continues Scott's exploration of the perceptions of gender and race, utilizing commonplace materials such as cinnamon, Vaseline, ivory soap, ocean water, fire, and leather.

Scott was born in Detroit, MI. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wayne State University in 1981 with a concentration in Printmaking and a minor in French. In 1995, Scott received a Hoffberger fellowship to pursue her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and installation at Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, MD. Scott has exhibited throughout North Carolina and the southeast, including at Harriet Tubman Museum of Art, The Mint Museum of Art, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and the Greenhill Center for North Carolina Art.

Artspace is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and education programs in an open-studio environment.
