Benedict College in Columbia, SC, Offers Art Faculty Exhibition

Benedict College in Columbia, SC, is offering the exhibit, Uncharted Waters, on view through Oct. 3, 2003, at The Ponder Fine Arts Gallery, in the Henry Ponder Fine Arts / Humanities Center at Benedict College.

This year's exhibition season takes its theme, Uncharted Waters, from the Fine Arts Department's Annual Faculty Exhibition. Uncharted Waters showcases the diverse talents of Benedict College art faculty with a series of new works by Susan Dugan, Tyrone Geter, Michael J. Hale, Gina Moore and John G. Wright. Some of the artists represented in the exhibition have undertaken the daunting task of creating artworks using processed, materials or concepts that stretch beyond each artist's comfort zone. The concept for this show came about last fall as the art faculty worked on re-formatting the curriculum. In deciding which courses to keep, which to discard, and what new curricula to create, we spent time in each other's classrooms learning more about what was being taught and what needed to be included in the department's new program. The time spent in the different classrooms galvanized the faculty to create new and exciting art, alongside that of their students during a normal class period.

Michael Hale was seen from time to time in the printmaking class. Tyrone Geter was often found haunting the sculpture studio and much to everyone's surprise, John Wright was getting messy in the ceramics room. Two important developments were the result of this sharing of creative workspace. The prime benefits were that the students learned more and became more innovative in the instructions and works. As teachers collaborated with students in the classrooms, roles reversed. Students took up the challenge of changing into teachers as they explained and demonstrated their newfound understanding of concepts inspired by the in-class efforts of their instructors.

The unusual works produced during the 2002-03 year energized the students. The works produced during the past year have been some of the best that any of the faculty had heretofore seen. In addition to the demonstrable growth of the students, art faculty agree that during the past year they have taken on new directions - a more open minded approach to their own work and to that of their students - by launching students' minds into these "uncharted waters".
