Crista Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, Features New Works by Herb Jackson
Crista Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, will present the exhibition, Veronica's Veil, featuring acrylic paintings by Herb Jackson. This solo exhibition featuring 10 new paintings from this series as well as related drawings will be on view from Sept. 26 through Nov. 17, 2003.
In 1979, when Jackson started the Veronica's Veils, he had no idea that he would be still working on the series (now numbering 155, five by four foot paintings) in 2003. In addition to being the same size, each painting is formatted so that an edge creates an inner rectangle that references the veil. Otherwise, what occurs inside that rectangle varies considerably throughout the series.
Veronica's Veil, is a 6th century myth about Saint Veronica recorded in the 13th century Golden Book of Legends. The most common version has her wiping the brow of Christ with her veil as he carries the cross. When she pulls back the garment, the image of his face is retained on the surface.
"The use of the concept grew out of my interest in the mystery behind the origin of abstract images and its relationship to the subconscious. The myth represents an event in which an image is seemingly breathed into being without the effort or control of an artist. I am not concerned with the specific narrative contained in the myth or the associated Christian imagery, but I do hope that my layered images will retain the mystical nature of the moment, upon completion, when a painting attains a life of its own." More than 130 Veronica's Veils are in private and public collections throughout the United States, including The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, The Columbia Museum of Art, in Columbia, SC, The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, and The North Carolina Governor's Mansion in Raleigh, NC.
Jackson has had over one hundred solo exhibitions in the US, England, Peru, Portugal and Canada. Critic Donald Kuspit included Jackson's paintings in the first exhibition of contemporary American art represented in the former Soviet Union. His work is represented in over eighty museums and hundreds of corporate and private collections. In 1999, Jackson was given the "North Carolina Award" by the governor.
Jackson's paintings are built up in many layers that are scraped off as they are being applied. Shapes and marks come and go as the painting develops to a hundred or more layers. The final outcome is the result of a process of discovery similar to the life experience itself.
