Clay on Camden in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Linda Dalton

Clay on Camden in Charlotte, NC's SouthEnd, will feature works in clay by Linda Dalton during the month of Sept., 2003.

Dalton became hooked on the art of pottery after taking a workshop in 1990, but it wasn't until 1996 that she started pursuing it full-time. "I wanted to do it since the first time I saw somebody making (something out of clay)," she remembers. "I felt an immediate attraction to clay with my first visual experience."

Dalton, who grew up in the North Carolina mountains, has resided in Charlotte for the last 34 years. She has taken ceramics classes at Central Piedmont Community College and the Jewish Community Center in Charlotte and has attended workshops with several well-known clay artists including Robin Hopper, Paul Soldner and Tom Coleman.

"I find joy by exploring different ideas through clay that are inspired by things I encounter in daily life, such as the movement of trees blowing in the wind and textures found in nature, and even in ordinary things around the house," she says. "Every experience in clay prompts me to think of other directions that I can take. I see the future, with clay in my life, as exciting."

Dalton is especially interested in wood firing. "I helped build a Noborigama wood kiln that we share with other potters," she explains.

Although Dalton created pieces in naked and horsehair raku for Clay on Camden's Fireworks raku show, she has concentrated on wood-fired work for this show, which will include teapots, large platters, vases, and other functional and non-functional original work.
