September Issue 2003
Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Features Group Show
The four artists showing at Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, through Oct. 3, 2003, are exciting, young and innovative. Their interests lie not only in visual art, but writing, acting, and music as well.
Alana Owens, although a year shy of graduating from Winthrop University, has a full resume. Owens lived in Brazil for a year at age 18, learning a new culture and language and working as a teacher's assistant in an elementary school. Upon her return, she entered Winthrop University and immersed herself in art studios, including painting, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Printmaking has become Owens' focus in her artwork, but her biggest interest is how she can transfer her ideas to others. Her ultimate goal is working in art education and art therapy.
Brent Owens, Alana's older brother, graduated from Winthrop University this year. He has not only exhibited in student shows at Winthrop, and galleries in Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Washington, DC, but has performed on stage in Rock Hill, SC, Sumter, SC and Charleston, SC. His work reflects his multi-talented persona; he moves from paintings to drawings to mixed media to sculpture with the ease and creativity of a much older and more experienced artist. Owens quotes "I attempt to develop relationships in my compositions that mimic relationships that I notice in the world around me" and "I alternate between materials and methods of production as I feel appropriate for a given piece."
Ann Stoddard
Ann Stoddard, the oldest of the four in the show, lives in Spartanburg, SC. Her list of exhibits range from paintings and drawings, sculpture, installations, and collaborative and performance. Starting in 1981 with exhibits in Detroit and New York, Stoddard has shown in major cities across the US and into Canada. Settling in the Carolinas, her most recent works have been shown in Charleston, SC, Damzale, Slovenla, and Spartanburg, SC, at the Milliken Art Gallery at Converse College. Stoddard has collaborated with husband Ralph Pacquin, also an artist, in installations and mixed media pieces. They "share an interest in the contrast between an outer facade and an unseen world."
Kina Taylor lives in Landrum. She works full time at Cottage Books in Landrum, and also as a free-lance artist. Art has been a big part of Taylor's life, influenced and supported by her family and friends. She enjoys painting, photography, textiles and writes poetry and short stories. Taylor prefers exposure and experience to be her education, and uses her "gift of art to give and gain inspiration.
