Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05
erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.
Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".
ERL Originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Michele Kingery
Abstract oil and acrylic paintings by Michele Degni Kingery will be featured at ERL Originals in Winston-Salem, NC, from Sept. 5 through Oct. 8, 2003.
"Developing a vision has been as crucial to my work as sharpening my artistic skill," Kingery explains. "As a result, I've begun to see art everywhere, not just in the grandiose and dramatic places, but also in the everyday places we live, work and spend our time. I see art in the beautiful landscapes flanking the highway and in the industrial hardscapes of a city, in a vase of flowers or a table laid with an empty glass and half a loaf of bread."
According to Kingery, the lives and works of artists are her inspiration, people like Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Vincent van Gogh, Mary Cassat, John Singer Sargent, Richard Diebenkorn, Georgia O'Keffe and Wolf Kahn, to name a few.
"I am equally inspired by the lives of people I know, who because of their own passion, are able to bring a little color, texture and hopefulness into the world around them," she adds.
Kingery, who lives in North Carolina, was born in New York, not far from where her grandparents settled after emigrating from Italy. Her great grandfather was a fresco painter in the region of Calabria, and though they never met, is a source of inspiration in her work. Primarily a self-taught painter, she has studied in museums from Florence, Italy to San Francisco, CA. Her work hangs in the American Consulate in Florence as well as in several collections in the Southeast.
