Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, NC. Features Exhibit of Handcrafted Furniture and Quilts

Through Sept. 29, 2003, Asheville, NC's Grovewood Gallery's exhibit room will become a place of dreams. The enchanting exhibit Pieceful Dreams will present a bedroom dreamland of exquisite handcrafted furniture and delightful quilting. This charming sleepy-time display will feature five queen size beds plus a handsome daybed. Atop each will be an exquisite creation by one of six talented quilt artists. It's a perfect match, sumptuous quilts gracefully covering handcrafted beds.

The styles of quilts featured were selected specifically for each bed. One such example is quilter Barbara Webster's graceful leaves and twig design to blend with the fairyland treatment of Dan Shelley's fanciful bent willow bed, which incorporates a high curved headboard. Webster works with a photo transfer process and book-matched images of nature to create a wild and wonderful effect.

Jim Probst's clean designs and exquisite craftsmanship are center stage in his newest work, the Dora Series, which will debut at Grovewood. His handsome bed, night table and dresser in curly maple and cherry are a study in elegant simplicity. Another new artist to Grovewood for this special collaborative exhibit is Denise Grohs of Miter's Touch. Her Spirits Bed and two matching bedside tables are dreamy combinations of walnut and curly maple. Brian Wurst's Ridgelines Bed captures the mountains of western NC with a flowing, carved relief headboard of figured maple and mahogany. His keen design sense and graceful woodworking make him a personal favorite of many gallery visitors.

Other quilters include Caroline Manheimer, a local quilt artist who utilizes hand-dyed fabrics and gyrating designs in circles and swirls to create lively quilts in magnificent color ranges. Aim Brauer, another contemporary quilter, will exhibit her complex and vibrant patterns of simple block abstracts to convey the sweeping feeling of the seasons and their moods. The progressions of various colors tend to further create a movement in each quilt that is like gazing on a soothing landscape. One of our own staff, Gita Binkley, will show off her traditional quilting techniques with baby quilts. Her Little Girl quilt is a series of 'Sunbonnet Sues', while the Little Boy quilt is a 'Funny Critters' pattern. Binkley's unmistakable attention to detail is most evident in her traditional quilt making and color coordinating.

Pieceful Dreams promises to be a dreamy collection of quilt artists and furniture makers, whose pieces promise to see you to bed for a lifetime of pieceful earns.
