Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Richard Stenhouse and Stephen Gleasner

Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, announces its seventh solo exhibition for NC native Richard Stenhouse and its first solo exhibition for sculptor Stephen Gleasner. Both exhibits will be on view Sept. 6 through Oct. 18, 2003.

Richard Stenhouse

For almost two decades, Stenhouse has been making drawings that evoke the soft luminescence that lies like a veil over the fields, forests and cities of the Carolinas. He uses pastel and graphite on translucent mylar to create haunting arid compelling images, which posses a certain psychological edge and mystery regardless of subject. For this current exhibition, Stenhouse continues his exploration with landscapes that juxtapose nature with manmade objects in startling and compelling ways. The works force the viewer to confront our environment with both a bit of whimsy and alarm.

Stenhouse received a BA in visual arts from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a MFA in visual arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has established a national reputation, participating in well over one hundred museum and gallery exhibitions.

Stephen Gleasner

Stephen Gleasner's elegant, polished cone-shaped vessels are tangible proof of his lifelong interest in woodworking. Using a lathe and various woodworking tools, Gleasner laminates then cuts, sands and dyes multiple layers of plywood veneer together to create astonishing works of art. He then lacquers and polishes the works to a high degree of finish, a finish so luminous that the vessels are often thought to be made of glass.

Currently residing in Maine, Gleasner received a BA in English from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Gleasner has been represented in many gallery exhibitions from coast to coast, and his work can be found in the permanent collection of the Contemporary Museum of Art in Honolulu, Hawaii.
