Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Mike Lavine
The Joie Lassiter Gallery located in the Odell Building in Uptown Charlotte, NC, will feature works by Mike Lavine in the exhibition entitled, Precious 016, from Sept. 5 - 30, 2003.
Through the transformation
of sawdust, a material that is usually discarded or used as a
base ingredient, Lavine explores humanity's relationship with
nature as this substance is elevated and re-invigorated as art.
Sawdust from precious tropical hardwoods are used to produce the
various shades and colors of this vibrant piece, that together
create a topographical landscape.
Fragile and in need of protection (as indeed are many of the world's
tropical forests) this installation is both breathtaking and thought
provoking. As if in a museum preservation case, Joie Lassiter
Gallery duplicates the highly protected conditions of the world's
most precious objects. Viewing is from the exterior only.
