Works by André Leon Gray to be Shown at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, NC
Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, NC, will be featuring works by Raleigh, NC, artist, André Leon Gray through Sept. 13, 2003. The exhibition being shown in the theater's lobby gallery is acting as a satellite gallery for the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, which currently has no facility of its own.
Gray was born and raised in Raleigh. As a self-taught artist and photographer, he produces mixed media assemblages inspired by the African American experience. Gray incorporates discarded objects into thoughtful fusions of history, culture, and breathtaking iconography. The artist refers to much of his work as "Eye Gumbo" a mix of the "creolization of African and European aesthetics". Gray currently holds a studio at Litmus Studios in downtown Raleigh. You can see more of his work at Glance Gallery.
Until the Contemporary Art Museum's new facility opens in the heart of downtown Raleigh, all of the Triangle area has become the Museum's gallery. Through partnerships with venues such as Manbites Dog Theater, CAM is able to continue supporting new and innovative works by regional artists. The Contemporary Art Museum is funded in part by its members and friends, the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission and the North Carolina Arts Council.
The lobby gallery is open during pre-curtain, intermission, post-performance, and also by appointment.
