Margaret Petterson Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Benefit Demonstration on Monotypes
On Sept. 18, 2003, from 6- 8pm, sneak a peek behind the scenes at the Margaret Petterson Gallery in Charleston, SC, and join her for a night of casual conversation centered on monotypes, one of the native artist's favorite ways to capture her Lowcountry surroundings. With demonstrations, a video, and Q&A session, Petterson will show you how she pairs oil and watercolor to print one-of-a-kind works of art.
One of a handful of present-day area artists who delve into the ancient practice of monotyping, Petterson is actually part of a long-standing Lowcountry printmaking tradition with forebears such as Anna Heyward Taylor, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner and the 1920s Charleston Etchers' Club, whose members included Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, among others.
The process Petterson employs is fascinating and uniquely her own. First she turns on the very necessary mood music (usually Eric Clapton) and then begins to cover a glass plate with swaths of paint. She then strips away color using anything from Q-tips to little chips of cardboard. Next, the plate runs through a hand-cranked press, which transfers the image to paper. Last, Petterson fills in the "blanks" with washes of watercolor. The final balance of positive and negative space, opaque and translucent media is a dance... and she welcomes you to come join her for a look.
Tickets for the event are $10 each or two for $15 (available at the door and by contacting the gallery). Proceeds are to benefit the Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association Scholarship Fund.
