September Issue 2003
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Exhibit with Fish as Subject
During the month of Sept., 2003, Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibition entitled The Fish Show. The exhibit features works in clay, oil, pastel, and other media. Most of the artists in the exhibition either live in or are from South Carolina.
Four artists who work with clay are participating
in the exhibition. Aggie Zed and Chris Rowley depict fish in sculpted
forms that diverge from each other in size and surface treatment.
Susan Filley ornaments porcelain platters and bowls with stylized
images of fish. The clean lines of these refined objects contrast
with the rougher forms of whimsical "fish bowls" that
Nina Liu, the gallery owner, has made for the exhibition.
Other artists in the exhibition work in two dimensions. Mana Hewitt
uses gold leaf and oils to create lush images of fish in roiling
streams of water. By their nature, Hewitt's paintings contrast
with Barbara Brody's pastels. Sue Simons Wallace, a new artist
for the gallery, is exhibiting fish prints.
Wallace creates these images using a traditional Japanese technique.
The Japanese used fish prints, known as gyotaku, to record various
types of fish prior to the introduction of photography. To create
one of her prints, Wallace carefully cleans the exterior of a
whole fish before covering it with water-soluble inks. Working
in the classical Japanese style, Wallace limits her palette to
shades of black, but she introduces some silver to the mixture
of ink so that the finished prints may reflect light. Once she
has applied ink to the fish, Wallace uses her hands to press the
image of the fish onto rice paper.
The exhibition also includes work by Jane Pelland, Janet Kozacheck,
and Eric Longo.
