Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Backroads Exhibition
Madeline Dukes
Solo Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, will present the exhibition, Scenes from the Blue Highways, a group exhibition featuring recent paintings by Madeline Dukes, Dorothy Shoemaker, Cama Tadlock and Jan Yearwood. The exhibit will be on view from Sept. 9 through Oct. 25, 2003.
Dorothy Shoemaker
These four artists traveled the backroad highways of the Carolinas for nine months and these exciting new works are the results of their "road trips".
Cama Tadlock
Cama Tadlock explained the origin of the show's title. When she was growing up in North Carolina, her dad loved to take the family "rambling" using his collection of road maps. On older maps, the local highways that run directly through small towns and rural areas were always colored blue and were often known for their wonderful scenery. Tadlock made a collage using some of her father's old road maps and then thought about traveling some of the blue highways to paint this special scenery before it disappears completely. She asked three other professional artists to join her in this endeavor.
Jan Yearwood
During numerous day trips and long weekends, from the mountains to the coast, the four artists painted plein aire whenever possible, sketched or took photographs to use in their studios later. The group exhibition will feature sixty paintings, fifteen from each artist, in a variety of styles and media. The works will be small format pieces, 16 x 20 inches and under. The artists will also display pages from their trip journal, allowing viewers of the paintings to glimpse the thoughts and emotions that inspired the work.
All four of these Carolina artists have won numerous juried awards and their artwork is found in corporate and private collections. On Sept. 14, the artists will be in the gallery to discuss their paintings and the journal entries.
