City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Arturo Lindsay
Mapping Ports: Sullivan's
Island, Goree Island, Portobelo, Habana and Seville Arturo Lindsay:
A Retrospective Exhibition
will be on view at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston,
SC, from Sept. 25 through Oct. 22, 2004. This retrospective exhibition,
part of the MOJA Arts Festival taking place in Charleston, Sept.
23 - Oct. 3, 2004, seeks to incorporate past works as well as
new works by artist Arturo Lindsay.
Lindsay utilizes numerous media - paintings, drawings, collages,
and art installations to create a visual space for remembering
the "nameless" peoples who were taken from various parts
of Africa, lived and died in the "middle passage", and
then those remaining who passed through various ports during the
time of slavery. One of his hopes is to create a dialogue for
the "painful histories" left with us as well as "...all
the isms that..." divide us.
New works for this exhibition reflect on Lindsay's encounters
and responses with Charleston, specifically Sullivan's Island,
SC. Like works from his past, he engages with historically significant
ports where enslaved peoples were taken by ship after being separated
fror their native lands. Sullivan's Island was one of the main
ports of entry for thousands of enslaved people from their trans-Atlantic
passage.
This exhibition seeks to engage with viewers on a visual level
that will lead to a better emotional understanding about the situation
of African descendants in today's society. Furthermore, Lindsay
helps to create dialogues to relate to the various histories in
which we are born into. During the exhibition there will be a
panel discussion for scholars and members of the community. To
view his work and to learn more about Lindsay, you can visit his
