Gallery 80808 in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Tyrone Geter

Gallery 80808 at Vista Studios in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit, Boxed In Framed Out, featuring artworks by Tyrone Geter from Sept. 9 - 22, 2004.

Geter is a multifaceted painter, sculptor and illustrator. Born in Anniston, AL, he attended Ohio University where he received his Masters of Fine Arts in 1976. He has lived and taught at Framingham State College, Boston, MA, Ahmadu Bello University Kaduna State, Nigeria (for 7 years), University of Akron, and is presently the Director of the Ponder Fine Arts Gallery at Benedict College, a Historical Black College in Columbia where he is proud to call his home.

Geter's work is centered firmly in the narrative tradition. Like the painted and spoken word, its first obligation is to communicate and make connections with the viewer in a positive way. His creative process has never been governed by popular and sometimes derivative trends common in
much of today's art. Geter is known as a painter who tends to express his own life experiences through his art, he's constantly in search of the deeper meaning of our existence and ways that we as individuals can become one as human beings.

Geter has illustrated 10 books and numerous spreads. Irene and the Big Fine Nickel was listed on the New York Times top ten list for books of our time, and White Socks Only was the recipient of the Cuffy award and a pick of the list book by the American Association of Book Sellers.

This exhibit will feature a number of new mini-paintings by Geter, as well as original paintings, charcoals and his signature collage images.
