Greenville Museum of Art in Greenville, NC, Features Works by James Daniel, III
The Greenville Museum of Art in Greenville, NC, will present the exhibition, James Daniel, III: Contemporary Fresco, featuring works by Asheville, NC, artist, James Daniel, from Sept. 9 through Oct. 31, 2004.
Daniel is a classical realist working in the tradition of the old masters in his frescoes, paintings and drawings. From 1995-2002 he was apprentice and assistant to well known fresco artist Ben Long. In 2002 Daniel completed his first solo fresco, at St Eugene's Catholic Church in Asheville.
Fresco is the art of painting water-based colors into wet plaster. It has been around for hundreds of years and reached its height in Italy during the 13th and 14th centuries. Probably the most famous frescoes ever done are those painted by Michelangelo on the ceiling and alter wall of the Sistine Chapel.
This exhibition will examine how a fresco is made, from the initial preparation of the plaster to the final application of the pigment. It will include a number of "mini" frescoes Daniel has made specifically for this exhibition, as well as actual cartoons and studies completed for other frescoes.
