Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Roy Rupy
The Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, will take you the water's edge with an exhibition of paintings entitled, At Water's Edge, by member artist, Roy Rupy. The exhibition will continue through Sept. 25, 2004.
As a youngster growing up in New York, Rupy kept himself amused with pencil and paper. With a close friend, he explored the marshy shores of Jamaica Bay in Queens. The rickety homes that surrounded the neighboring landscape were the frequent subjects of his art. The New York city subways played a major role in his early life, as he traveled to art classes at the High School of Music and Art. Though he was accepted into Cooper Union, he failed to show up for registration and thus forfeited his place in the class. After some time in the service and a number of jobs in various advertising studios, Rupy landed a job with the Long Island Railroad, first as a sign painter, then as carpenter for the bridge and building department. The bulk of his career was as a member of New York's Finest, as a NYC police officer.
Retirement brought Rupy to Lake Havasu in Arizona where he played around with model railroading and finally got back to painting. His studies in "leisure painting" at Mohave Community College led to the position of "instructor of leisure painting." As a member of the Lake Havasu Art Guild, he won numerous awards and began selling his paintings.
In 1996, Rupy moved to Hilton Head Island where his love of the marshes and shoreline renewed his interest in painting the landscapes and seascapes which now surrounded him. "Here is home for me," says Rupy, "surrounded by the kinds of artistic subjects that resonate with my past."
Today Rupy's medium of choice is oil paint, "because it is so forgiving." "Some of my paintings are scenes that I dream up, using certain photos from the collection of hundreds I've been taking over the decades. They supply the inspiration and accuracy," he adds. Over time, he finds that he may go back to paintings he had been working on to add ideas and make improvements." Few other mediums (oils) can offer this luxury.
The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the art skills of its members. Begun in 1972, the League now manages a volunteer-operated art gallery in Pineland Station for the exhibition and sale of artwork by its members. Workshops sponsored by the League feature nationally-renowned instructors in all mediums. These workshops attract students from across the country. The Hilton Head Art League Art Academy offers classes in all mediums on a less intensive scale, featuring local art instructors. A scholarship for graduating high school students pursuing a career in the visual arts is available annually.
