McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Eldridge Bagley and William Clarke
The McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Brothers on a Journey, featuring 60 works by self-taught folk artists Eldridge Bailey and William Clarke. The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 9, 2005.
Bagley and Clarke, who still live in the communities
where they were born, grew up in neighboring rural counties in
Virginia but never met until they were middle-aged. Their creative
paths crossed in the 1990s through a mutual friendship with collector
Julia J. Norrell.
Both men began painting later in life but have since immersed
themselves in learning their craft. Bagley, who grew up on a farm
in Plymouth, VA, works with oils on 24" by 36" linen
canvases and creates art that is autobiographical in nature, from
landscapes to farm scenes to church Sundays.
Clarke grew up in Blackstone, VA, and depicts small-town life
in his work. He uses acrylics on paper, matboard and, occasionally,
canvas for his paintings, which range from as small as 18"
by 18" to as large as 32" by 55".
Through their depictions of rural, small-town life in their paintings,
Bagley and Clarke give a glimpse of the lives they lived. They
affirm their relationships to the land and to the people who lived
an agrarian life.
