Piazza Gallery Art & Framing in Mount Pleasant, SC, Features Works by Victoria Platt Ellis

The Piazza Gallery Art & Framing in Mount Pleasant, SC, will feature the oils and watercolors of Victoria Platt Ellis from Sept. 1 - 30, 2004.

Ellis is a self-taught artist who has studied in workshops with many prominent artists and developed her own distinctive style. Known for her vivid colors and stunning use of light, Ellis' paintings convey her obvious joy. "Ever since I was a little girl drawing with a stick in the dirt at the foot of my rural front porch steps I have been fascinated with fitting shapes together to make designs. Every large or small element within a painting is part of the puzzle that comes together to form the design of the art work,' says Ellis.

Like all artists, Ellis' technique evolved through various stages. In some periods, she was primarily interested in light; at other times, color. "Since many of my paintings feature buildings found in nearby historical Charleston, SC, viewers often think that I am particularly interested in depicting architecture. Although I find these structures to be beautiful, I only extract their forms to create art. Choosing which way to arrange the bits and pieces to create an exciting image is the goal!"

For Ellis, the basics of design, light and color will always remain dominate in her work. Says Ellis, "There are no deep, mysterious, psychological meanings that these scenes are supposed to portray. They are paintings that please and thrilled me to execute. I hope you will enjoy them too! For example, in my piece All Around Town, I was trying to record the movement of the bus, how its weight and the lay of the land determine how it rests. How the people stand as they wait, even the location of bus stop is important to making the whole image work."

As for another piece, Ellis says "Seven AM, is an attempt to record the casualness by which we sometimes live in the Southeast. No one is in a particular hurry. Some have even stopped to pass a friendly word on their way. The painting did not happen as you see it. It is part of my process to incorporate from several references. Here about five to seven references have been used. Unlike OK Grocery, whereby some stroke of luck, it was there, just waiting to be painted."
